New! I'm creating a print version of this Web site and would like to share a free sample with you. If you're interested, drop me a line or read this blog post for more information.

The Folio theme is characterized by large, bleeding photos, four lines of captions, including titles and copyright info imported directly from iPhoto, and sleek black or white backgrounds. Helvetica Neue is used throughout. It has six distinct text-only pages (three under Title, and one each under Text, About, and Contact), but only one- or two-photo layouts. You can also create maps and blank pages.

Changes in iPhoto '09

The only changes to the Folio layout in iPhoto '09 are the addition of two introduction (or text) pages (in the Title section; the third already existed as the Text page) and the ability to create maps. As far as I can tell, everything else has remained the same.

Summary of Outside Layouts

Summary of Inside Layouts

Because there are four separate text layouts, I have left that part of the menu in the illustration so you can tell them apart.

Backgrounds

The Folio theme offers only black and white backgrounds for the outside and adds the Photo Background (formerly Palm Tree) tolet you use any image you want for the background of the inside pages.

Cover Examples

If you look at the cover layout menu you might think they're pretty straight-forward. They change pretty radically, however, depending on the orientation of your photos.

With two vertical photos, the photos are placed side by side and the caption goes below:

With two horizontal photos, the photos are stacked on the left and the caption goes to the right:

A crazy thing happens when you use two differently-oriented photos: the vertical one fills the cover from top to bottom but the horizontal one leaves a space for the caption. Depending on which photo is first, you can get the caption on the right:

Or the left:

Only one of the resulting layouts has any resemblance to the little picture that shows up in the menu!

Text Page Examples

The Folio theme has four distinct types of text pages. The Title page now includes three layouts. The first is unique to Folio with a large header and a medium sized subheader.

The second and third layouts under Title are the standard second and third introduction pages: one is just one large block of text:

while the other is the customary two colums, here aligned to the right:

Where is the first standard introduction page? Read on, and you shall find.

The Text page has a smaller header and a paragraph of body text. In contrast to the second introduction page, this one is aligned to the left.

The About page has a large header a smaller subhead and a paragraph.

Finally, the Contact page has room for your name, address, and other pertinent data.

One-photo Layout Examples

The one-photo menu is not very illustrative. If you choose Layout 1, what you get depends largely on the original orientation of your photo. If your photo is horizontal, you'll get a full bleed photo with a super-imposed caption in white. If your photo is vertical, it fills the right hand of the page from top to bottom, and leaves half the page blank for the caption. In either case, the title and copyright information automatically comes from your iPhoto data.

If you choose the second one-photo layout, you might think you'd get a square frame. You don't. You get a large but not bleeding photo with the same orientation with which it started, plus a caption either below or to its left.

Two-photo Layout Examples

There is only one two-photo layout. If you have two horizontal photos, they are stacked to the right with captions to the left. Vertical photos are laid out side by side with captions below:

If you mix one vertical and one horizontal photo, they are placed side by side with captions below:

Notes

You can change the background to all white instead of all black. I thought this might change the superimposed text, but it does not. Those captions over full-bleed photos are always white, by default. (You can, of course, change the text to any color you want.)
